Chemical Peel Aftercare Guide: Houston's Complete 7-10 Day Recovery Plan
You just had a chemical peel at Tu Es Belle Spa — congratulations on taking a big step toward smoother, brighter, more even-toned skin. The next 7 to 10 days are critical. What you do (and don't do) during this window determines how well your peel heals and how radiant your final results look.
This is the complete post-treatment care guide our Medical Esthetician gives every chemical peel client at our Galleria/Uptown Houston spa. Whether you had a light chemical peel, a TCA peel, or TCA Cross treatment, follow this guide closely.
Do's for the First 7 to 10 Days
Drink lemon-infused water to stay hydrated and support your body's natural detoxification.
Eat clean, nutrient-rich meals — whole foods, fresh vegetables, lean proteins, and antioxidant-rich fruits — to promote healing from the inside out.
Apply SPF 50 daily for life and reapply every 2 hours, even on cloudy days. We recommend Epionce Daily Shield Lotion Tinted SPF 50 — it's what we apply at the spa. Sun protection after a peel is not optional.
Use Hyaluronic Acid and Aloe Vera gel 24/7 to keep the skin hydrated and calm during the peeling process.
Apply Aquaphor at night starting on day 4, layered with hyaluronic acid, to lock in moisture as your skin renews.
Apply Aquaphor to your lips every night to prevent cracking and dryness.
Use a mild cleanser with cold water morning and night — no scrubbing, no hot water, no harsh cleansers.
Apply eye cream every night to keep the delicate eye area hydrated and comfortable.
Keep your skin clean throughout the day and gently pat dry — never rub.
Wash your hands before touching your skin. Bacteria is one of the biggest risks during peel recovery.
Change pillowcases and bed sheets frequently. Fresh linens every 2 to 3 days minimum during recovery.
Regularly clean your phone and eyeglasses — anything that touches your face.
Wash makeup brushes consistently to prevent bacteria buildup once you're cleared to use them again.
Don'ts for the First 7 to 10 Days
Avoid foundation and concealer. Your skin needs to breathe and shed naturally.
Avoid spicy or hot foods. These can trigger inflammation and increase redness.
Avoid oily or greasy foods. These may interfere with the healing process.
Do not consume alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates the skin and slows healing.
Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and intense workouts. Sweating irritates freshly peeled skin.
Avoid swimming and any contact with chlorine. Harsh chemicals will damage healing skin.
Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds. UV exposure during recovery can cause hyperpigmentation.
Do not use chemical or harsh skincare products. Now is not the time to experiment.
Avoid active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, or BHAs for the full 7 to 10 days.
Avoid all makeup until your Medical Esthetician clears you.
What's Normal During Chemical Peel Recovery
- Mild redness or inflammation for a few days is completely normal
- Sensitivity may last up to 2 weeks
- Peeling and flaking typically starts around day 3 to 4 and continues for several days
- Tightness and mild itching as skin sheds — do NOT pick or peel manually
Skin Purging After a Chemical Peel — Completely Normal
Thinking of getting a chemical peel? Do not worry if you see a little purging after your treatment — it is just your skin's way of pushing out hidden congestion. Breakouts, bumps, or whiteheads can appear 3 to 7 days after your peel. This is only temporary and actually means the peel is working. As the chemical exfoliant accelerates cell turnover, it brings underlying impurities to the surface faster than your skin would naturally shed them.
With the right aftercare — gentle cleanser, hydration, SPF 50+, and no picking — you will reveal smoother, clearer, and healthier skin. Purging typically resolves within 7 to 14 days. If breakouts persist beyond two weeks or worsen significantly, text us at (346) 812-7727.
If you experience anything more intense — severe redness, extreme discomfort, or signs of infection — text us immediately at (346) 812-7727.
Why Chemical Peel Aftercare Matters
A chemical peel triggers your skin to shed its damaged outer layers and reveal fresh, healthy skin underneath. During this renewal process, your skin is more vulnerable to sun damage, bacteria, and irritation. Following the aftercare plan protects the investment you made in your treatment and ensures you get the full benefit — smoother texture, brighter tone, reduced pigmentation, and long-lasting radiance.
At Tu Es Belle Spa, our Medical Esthetician at Tu Es Belle Spa customizes each aftercare plan based on the specific peel you received. A light chemical peel has a different recovery timeline than a TCA peel or TCA Cross treatment. Follow your personalized plan closely.
Products We Recommend During Recovery
- Epionce Daily Shield Lotion Tinted SPF 50 — broad-spectrum sun protection, applied every 2 hours
- Hyaluronic Acid serum or gel — for constant hydration
- Aloe Vera gel — calms and soothes
- Aquaphor — for overnight moisture (starting day 4) and lips
- Mild, non-stripping cleanser — cold water only
Ask us at your appointment which specific Epionce products are right for your skin type and the peel you received.
FAQ: Chemical Peel Aftercare in Houston
Q: How long does it take to fully heal from a chemical peel?
A: Most clients see the peeling phase resolve within 5 to 7 days, with skin fully returning to normal by day 10 to 14. Deeper peels like TCA may take longer. Results may vary by skin type and peel strength.
Q: When can I wear makeup again after a chemical peel?
A: Wait until your skin has finished peeling and any redness has faded — usually 7 to 10 days minimum. Your Medical Esthetician will give you the exact timeline based on your peel.
Q: Is it normal for my skin to look worse before it looks better?
A: Yes. Redness, flaking, and mild peeling are all part of the process. Your fresh, glowing skin reveals itself as the old layers shed away. Do not pick or force the peeling.
Q: Can I use my regular skincare after a chemical peel?
A: Not for the first 7 to 10 days. Stick to gentle cleanser, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, Aquaphor, and SPF 50 only. Reintroduce active ingredients gradually and only after your esthetician clears you.
Q: Why is SPF so important after a chemical peel?
A: Freshly peeled skin is extremely vulnerable to UV damage, which can cause hyperpigmentation and undo your treatment results. SPF 50 daily is a lifelong habit, but especially critical during recovery.
